The birthday party we’ll never forget!

I was always the girl who thought I’d never have kids.  I was in my 30’s – hadn’t met my man yet, and thought that my chances of having a baby were slim!

Fast forward to my mid ok, late 30’s – now married to an old high school boyfriend, we had a baby in March 2010.  I was the one saying NO PINK!  I will NOT put my little girl in ALL PINK!   I thought that covering her in all pink was far too girly for me and I’d never fall into that trap.   I also swore to never have a big gala for a birthday party.  It’s super silly to do a big gala for a kid who won’t remember.

Fast forward one year later – my little girl has mostly pink outfits {picked out mostly by me!}, jeans with little tiny pink flowers embroidered on them, the most adorable pink barrettes for her hair, and just had the most wonderful PINK and brown birthday gala planned {by me} for her first birthday.  I guess you could say I am a sucker for cute pink girlie things now.

Saturday’s party was planned and ready to go.  The cupcake pops {Bakerella style} were dipped and sprinkled.  The tutu and bib were handmade.  The photo timeline took days to create!  Pink butterfly balloons were flying high and the pink and brown birthday banner was hung by the table with care {in hopes that St. Nick…}. You get the picture.  Everything was picture perfect.

Everything that is, except for the sweet little girl in the pretty pink tutu.  Her day began with a fever and a runny nose.  Her celebration began and unfortunately, so did the screaming.  My sweet little munchkin who was turning ONE wanted not one thing to do with anyone who had come to celebrate with her.

She walked aimlessly from person to person, screaming at each one.  She stood in the middle of yard, crying, and looking up at mom and dad to save her.  Bless her heart, she was just miserable.

In hopes of saving the day, we distracted her with cake and presents.  The presents were a brief moment of slight happiness, followed by a shrieking one year old, scared to death of her cake!  This was the moment I was waiting for all year – the cake smashing pics were not…going…to….turn…out…my….way!

At least the guests enjoyed good food and cake pops while they were staring at this alien that was our daughter!  Needless to say, it was not~at~all how mommy had planned it out – and the grand gala I’d planned ended up being a waste!  Guess there’s a lesson to be learned in all of this!

I wouldn’t normally share pics of my darling here, but some of these are just priceless, and I know they’ll make you giggle {something I’m finally able to do!}  So enjoy a laugh at my benefit!

It’s a birthday we’ll be talking about for years to come.

  1. Every birthday will be wonderful! I said no pink either. I kept it off until everyone mistook her for a boy. It took a good two years before her hair grew in!

    She is so cute!

  7. What a beautiful little girl! And what a wonderful party you planned. My son turns 4 this year and it seems like yesterday we were doing the hokey pokey with Elmo in a tent in the backyard in the pouring rain. We've told him the story so often that he remembers it all! 🙂 Followed from the blog hop.
